Sameer was in news for the controversy on the censor of the film. CBFC ordered the makers to remove three words, "Mann ki baat", from a dialogue as it is the name of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's radio show.

The film sought UA certificate but Examining Committee gave 'A" certificate and apart from deleting words "Mann Ki Baat", the Committee gave another 6 cuts, which were not acceptable to the makers as those cuts could badly damage overall narrative of the film. The filmmaker challenged CBFC's order in Appellant Tribunal in Delhi, the committee set up under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of Govt. of India. The film was screened on 17th May 2017 for Appellant Tribunal Committee at Film Division auditorium and after almost 4 hearings, finally, with some crucial cuts, Honorable Tribunal granted "U/A" certificate to "Sameer". You can refer to the detailed report on the censor below.
